Tips for Tradies

A few things worth doing before you start a job.

  1. Get it in writing. Keep quotes, changes and agreements in texts or emails. A handshake can be hard to prove if there's a dispute.
  2. Get your payment sorted upfront. Consider taking a deposit to secure materials and collecting the balance while you’re still onsite once the job is complete. Save yourself the headache of chasing invoices later. Make sure your payment terms meet any legal requirements.
  3. Take before and after photos. Record the condition of the job before starting and once it's finished, with the customer's permission where needed.
  4. Make your terms clear. Include your terms of trade on quotes and invoices, and make them easy to find on your website.

Tips for Customers

A few things to check before booking a tradie.

  1. Choose an established business. Look at its track record, recent reviews and whether its contact details are easy to verify.
  2. Check licences. Ask to see any licences or registrations required for the work. A reputable tradie should be happy to provide them.
  3. Read the terms. Check the quote and terms and conditions, especially deposits, payment dates and when the balance is due. Don’t assume you’ll receive an invoice to pay later. Ask before the work starts.
  4. Watch out for unlicensed operators and scammers. A uniform and a tidy, well-presented work van or ute are good signs that you’ve hired a professional. A flashy 300 Series isn’t everything. Give the hardworking tradie in the van a look too. Always check licences where required and verify who you’re dealing with.
